Basic Glass Fusing and Slumping

Designed for those who wish to cover all the basics in a single weekend.  This course will teach you everything you need to know to get started.  Topics covered include kiln and mold preparation, glass selection, project design, firing schedules, annealing, and compatibility testing.   Students will make several small coasters/tiles or jewelry pieces and one larger slumped bowl or similar shape.  All materials provided, no experience necessary, but familiarity with glass cutting is helpful.

Intensive Introduction to Kiln-formed Glass

This intensive course is the ideal refresher for those who've been away from the kiln for a while, or who want to kick start their fusing experience with an intensive, hands-on course.  The class starts with an overview of the basics of fusing and slumping, including kiln and mold preparation, glass selection, project design, firing schedules, annealing, and compatibility testing.   Then it builds on the basics by touching on a cross-section of intermediate techniques, including

  •   Inclusions between layers of glass
  •   Working with powders, frits, and stringers
  •   Kiln-carving
  •   Glass combing

All materials provided, no experience necessary, but familiarity with glass cutting is strongly recommended.

Designing with Glass Powder

A thorough introduction to "painting with light", the use of glass powders, frits, and stringers to create unique and personal design elements.  Techniques for shading, creating texture, and drawing will all be covered, as well as demonstrations of powder wafers and other ways of achieving painterly effects in glass.

Not only is this an excellent workshop for beginning through advanced kiln workers, it's also appropriate for artists from other media who want to expand their palette and translate their ideas into glass.  Drawing ability is not required, but familiarity with glass cutting and basic kiln-forming techniques is helpful.  All materials are provided and no prior experience is necessary.

Introduction to Glass Casting and Pate de Verre

An introduction to methods for kiln casting glass, including:
  • Open faced casting, using clay and plaster/silica molds
  • Lost wax casting
  • Pate de verre, using a "paste of glass" in a mold

Topics such as mold-making and firing schedules will be covered.  This is a hands-on class in which students will learn to use existing molds or create their own molds from clay and plaster.  Experience with basic kiln processes is helpful, but not required.

Beyond Two Layers (Working Deep)

The course begins with making pattern bars and expands to include stack firing and related techniques for working with thicker blocks and multiple layers of glass.  Three different approaches to creating thicker items will be discussed and demonstrated.  Techniques discussed will include:
  •   Basic techniques for using glass sheet and frit to form embedded and surface designs
  •   Dam-building and related volume control techniques for thicker items and pattern bars
  •   Cold working, with a focus on edge-working on the wet belt sander
  •   Discussion of using these techniques for making larger items such as table tops and sinks

All techniques will be demonstrated.  Students will be able to make several items using their choice of techniques. Experience with basic kiln processes essential.

The Project Course

At last!  Here's a hands-on workshop that's oriented to learning new techniques, expanding old ones, and completing a myriad of kiln-forming projects. We'll focus on four specific techniques:  glass weaving, creating strip bowls, fused glass mosaics, and using high temperature firing methods.

Along the way, numerous glass processes will be demonstrated and discussed, including making and using pattern bars, using stringers and powders, and working with mica and other inclusions.  We'll explore the kiln-forming process from initial concept to final piece, and will also touch on sandblasting, cold-working, hanging, and related finishing techniques.

Plan on an action-packed, hands-on class with plenty of opportunities to create both finished work and components for use in future projects.  All materials will be included, but previous experience with basic kiln processes is required.  Limited class size to allow for more personal instruction.

High Temperature Firing

This course will explore kiln-forming processes that take place at 1550F and higher.  Techniques covered will include combing (manipulating molten glass), high temperature flat fusing with fiber dams, aperture pours (pot melts), and creating stringers with a vitrograph kiln.  Familiarity with glass cutting and with basic fusing and slumping techniques is recommended, but not essential.

Taught by Jody Walker, this intensive course focuses on design elements in nature and how they can be translated to your work in glass.  We'll discuss how to use stencils, photographs, or found natural objects as inspiration, and will explore both realistic and abstract concepts.  You can use enamels, powders and micas to realize your ideas.  Airbrushing, brush painting, etching, and printmaking techniques will also be demonstrated and discussed.

Drawing ability is not required.  Class size limited to four persons.

Fused Glass Mosaics

Fused glass mosaics offer a great way to create glass tiles, panels, and shaped pieces.  The process allows you to create multi-colored pieces with shading and complex images even if you only have basic glass cutting skills.  We'll spend the first day of the course using test pieces to explore different textures and patterns, then take what we learn to create a more complex full-sized mosaic piece.  Students should bring images that they are interested in translating into a glass mosaic.

Here's a great introduction to making fused glass jewelry.  You'll learn the basics the first morning, and will create beautiful fused glass pieces on the first day.  We'll explore both regular and dichroic glass, as well as learn how to use bails and wire to finish our pieces.  In addition to basic pendants and earrings, we'll also create a fused glass bracelet on the second day.

Coldworking and Finishing

In this two-day workshop we will explore various surface treatments and cold-working techniques that can elevate the ordinary glass object to the extraordinary. Sandblasting and Airbrushing

An introduction to the basics of sandblasting and airbrushing for fusers.  Topics covered include:

  • Sandblasting
    • Basic equipment required, and how to set it up
    • Sandblasting safety
    • Removing unwanted kiln wash, devitrification, or other materials from glass
    • Etching patterns using a resist
  • Airbrushing
    • Basic equipment and setup
    • Using with micas and enamels

This is a hands-on class.  All participants will get the opportunity to blast and use the airbrush.  As with all of our classes, all materials are included.

Printmaking Techniques on Glass

Cold Working and Finishing Glass

Under the direction of internationally known glass artist Johnathon Schmuck, you'll learn what it takes to make your work stand out from the crowd.  This intensive, hands-on workshop begins with the fundamentals of cold working glass and proceeds to more advanced methods of finishing.  We'll focus on learning the techniques and approaches that will help create "gallery quality" finishes with the least amount of time and effort. 

Students will have the opportunity to work on a variety of machines, including the wet belt sander, the flat lap, the glass lathe, the glass saw, the hand engraver, and the angle grinder.  We'll also study hand lapping, fire polishing, and sandblasting.

About the instructor:  Johnathon Schmuck, who has a studio in Santa Cruz, CA, was awarded the first Fulbright Scholarship to attend the Canberra School of Art, in Australia, where he studied under cold working maestro Steven Proctor.  He received a Master of Visual Arts (MVA) degree in 2000.   Johnathon worked with Klaus Moje, Kirstie Rea, and Scott Chaseling while the Roll Up technique for blowing kiln formed glass was being perfected at Canberra, and is one of the leading practitioners of the Roll Up in the United States.  He is a gifted artist and teacher who has taught internationally.  This is his first visit to the Warm Glass Studio in North Carolina.  See Johnathon's work in the Warm Glass Gallery or on his website at http://www.schmuckglass.com/

Dichroic Etching and Painting

After a brief introduction to dichroic glass, jewelry-worker and glass artist Barry Kaiser will cover several methods of etching dichroic to achieve detailed designs.  In addition to basic cream etching techniques, students will learn several more elaborate methods for creating designs, including:

1) Using computer generated masks to create detailed designs in dichroic

2)  Using frisket and frisket type masks

3)  Hand painting to create masks for etching dichroic jewelry.

In addition to etching, this class also teaches multi-level use of dichroic glass and how to integrate designs for up to three different colors of dichroic in one piece.  The use of masked paints to enhance small pieces in many ways including framing and interior design. The student will learn to add dimension and depth to pieces, and techniques such as using masked paints on small pieces and stamping with mica powder will also be discussed.

Experience with dichroic glass is very helpful, but not required.  Students are also expected to have a basic knowledge of cutting glass and an understanding of basic glass fusing techniques.

Bails, Bails, Bails... and Gold for Glass Jewelry

This class will be a tour de force on using jewelry bails. We will start with the basic glue on Aanraku bails.  Included will be a thorough discussion of adhesives.   From there we go into the at least 9 other methods to make bails including: 

  • Glass strip bails

  • Glass single bails

  • Glass clay bails

  • Pattern wire bails

  • Fine silver wire bails fused into pendant

  • PMC bails

  • Pinch bails drilled

  • Sterling wire work

  • Wire wrap bails

  • And more!

We will be working with earring settings in several variations, and will finish with a section on the application of gold to pendants.  This includes decals, penwork, and paint application.

Experience with dichroic glass is very helpful, but not required.  Students are also expected to have a basic knowledge of cutting glass and an understanding of basic glass fusing techniques.

Cloisonné and Decals for Jewelry

This class will start with several methods of making glass cloisonné pendants. Included will be several ways of using silver layout.

Colors will be added by: 

  • Glass and porcelain paints

  • Enamels

  • Mica paints (which you will learn to make)

Painting on pendants will be examined in more detail.

 The second portion of the class will focus on creating decals using decal paper and computer. These will then be used to create full color decor for glass.  

We will then teach how to make silver and gold glass backgrounds inexpensively for your pieces.

Experience with dichroic glass is very helpful, but not required.  Students are also expected to have a basic knowledge of cutting glass and an understanding of basic glass fusing techniques.

Glass Clay

Two day session

This class will start with a full description of Glass Clay and the uses for this wonderful material. The remainder of the class will be a hands on experience with it. We will:
  1. Make free forms
  2. Create die cut forms for use in larger pieces.
  3. Create forms within forms.
  4. Give our Clay textures and three dimensional elements

Next we will explore Molding Glass Clay. This will be both Freeze forming it and projects that do not use freezing. Elements made with clay will then be added to larger backings to create multidimensional jewelry. Finally we will explore the use of clay out of syringes to give motion to our glass.

Students are expected to have an understanding of glass fusing basics as well as be able to cut and assemble glass.
