Hotworked, Kilnformed, Cold finished

Two day session

Johnathon Schmuck

All levels

October 23 to 24, 2009

Thursday from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm

Friday from 9:30 to 4:00 pm

In the kiln-and-glory-hole class we will be combining some techniques of the hot shop with those in the kiln and in the coldshop.  Glass will be hot manipulated at the glory hole for the formation of hot color twists, overlays, and murrinis.  We will then be taking these parts to the kiln to produce kilnformed object that will then be carved, shaped, and finished to perfection.

This class will show the student to hot make these hot-worked elements and how to then prepare the pieces so they can be put into the kiln. We will spend time in the coldshop to show safe and time-saving ways to cut, grind, and smooth the glass --both before and after the firings. This process is a way to make some very interesting and unique kilnformed glass.

About the instructor:  Johnathon Schmuck is the author of The Joy of Coldworking: A Guide to Grinding, Smoothing, and Polishing Blown and Fused Glass.  He has a studio in Santa Cruz, CA, was awarded the first Fulbright Scholarship to attend the Canberra School of Art, in Australia, where he studied under cold working maestro Steven Proctor.  He received a Master of Visual Arts (MVA) degree in 2000.   Johnathon worked with Klaus Moje, Kirstie Rea, and Scott Chaseling while the Roll Up technique for blowing kiln formed glass was being perfected at Canberra, and is one of the leading practitioners of the Roll Up in the United States.  He is a gifted artist and teacher who has taught internationally.  See Johnathon's work in the Warm Glass Gallery or on his website at http://www.schmuckglass.com/
